ART DECO

Art Deco, also known as style moderne, is a decorative arts and design movement that began in the 1920s and became popular in western Europe and the United States in the 1930s. The name comes from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which took place in Paris in 1925 and was the first exhibition of the theme. Art Deco style exemplified modernism's transformation into fashion. Its offerings included both handcrafted luxury pieces and mass-produced wares, but the aim was to create a chic, anti-traditional beauty that represented wealth and refinement in both cases.

NUDE GROUP OF FOUR (1925)

Four Nudes by Lempicka, from 1925, exudes eroticism and strong femininity. Four naked women recline in an intricate tangle of oval, heavily posed, and sharply colored body parts in this photograph. The robust, sensual figures, with their sultry voices, recall the nudists of Lempicka's forefathers, from Ingres and Delacroix to Matisse and Picasso.
